Warp have been on an A&R frenzy lately, and Julie Campbell aka LoneLady is the latest addition to their stellar roster. Being from Manchester, she cites (unsurprisingly) a lot of the usual Mancunian post-punk influences – Joy Division, The Fall, etc, etc – but her voice is a whole lot prettier than Mark E. Smith’s. ‘Intuition’ is the first single proper from the forthcoming album due in Feb, and has graced the RoG decks a number of times in recent months. You’ll probably hear it tonight (Queen of Hoxton, 1 Curtain Road). Wrap your ears around this, and if you like it, grab the free track from LoneLady’s website:

Dead Kids practically destroyed the place when they headlined Round Our Gaff last year. Casualties included tables and a few bar stools, several pints, our mate Paul’s spectacles and nearly frontman Mike Title himself (Camden people are mighty possessive of their beer). So naturally we are thrilled to hear that their debut album’s arrival is imminent, and that there are two tasty titbits in the form of “German Heart” and a remix of said track by a kick-ass sounding group by the name of Invasion.

Ultra-cute YouTube video for the original is yonder, with the remix MP3 just below:

Another one of my favourites that I’d thought had gone forever… blissed out Brummies Broadcast have announced a new mini-album, a collaborative effort with The Focus Group, aka Julian House, graphic designer and fellow library-music archaeologist.

The first snippets have been posted up on the Warp website, and the results sound promising indeed.

Meet our latest crush, Hudson Mohawke, the man whose caught the ears of Warp Records and convinced them it was about high time they released a hip hop record. Well, I say hip hop, but you know that when Warp gets involved all is not so easily classifiable. “Turbo-soul” or “Blacklite blues” would be a bit closer to the mark.

Warp have put up an MP3 sampler of HudMo’s forthcoming album “Butter” (that title is so perfect I wanna cry).

Hudson Mohawke – Butter Snips

See what I mean?

Whatever it is, it certainly makes us feel all funny inside, and we’re not the only ones – apparently Rhianna’s people have been in touch begging young Hud Mo to give her a crack at some cred and a track to wrap her pipes around.

The ultra hip amongst you will already be onto him. Way back when he was a wee lad in Glasgow, he made a couple of white label remixes with vocal hooks from an Ashanti track and perhaps more appropriately, Ms Dynamite(e-hee)’s protogeé Tweet’s ode to female self-love, released by Glasgow’s Wireblock label. For your pleasure:

Ooops

Still On It

We’ll be playing some Hud Mo at the next Round Our Gaff for sure (October 1st at Queen of Hoxton, deets here.)
